Letterkenny General Hospital – Acute Mental Health Unit

*NOTE: T. J. O’Connor & Associates were not the Consulting Engineers for the Accident and Emergency building project, completed in 2013, which is associated with the severe flooding event of July 2013.

The Acute Mental Health Unit consists of a 36-bed unit comprising a floor area of 1,780m2 on the grounds of Letterkenny General Hospital. The project included an enabling works contract which involved the demolition of a reinforced concrete framed building and the provision of temporary carparking.

The new building is a single storey reinforced concrete framed structure which allows flexibility for future changes in internal room layout. There is a connection to the main hospital building via a link corridor and works associated with this required careful planning and phasing to ensure that ongoing hospital activities were not disrupted.

Civil works include extensive earthworks, new carparking and the installation of new foul and surface water drainage and watermains. The drainage and watermains had to be connected not only to the existing hospital network, but also to new services being constructed as part of anther major project in an adjacent site within the hospital grounds. This was achieved through careful planning and co-ordination from an early stage in the design process.

T.J.O’ Connor & Associates have been involved in various continuing appointments at Letterkenny General Hospital since 1980, namely a single storey 50 bed Acute Psychiatric Unit, 10 bed Geriatric Unit (1992), extensions to the Radiology Department (1997), Orthopaedic Department (1999) and the Oncology / Renal Department (2003).
