New Ross Interim Flood Alleviation Scheme

This project involved interim works to improve the standard of flood protection to the Quays in New Ross and at Rosbercon. Currently, the lower lying parts of New Ross are subject to flooding when high tides combine with low pressure and southerly winds on the River Barrow. Wexford County Council appointed TJ O’Connor & Associates to undertake a feasibility study of flood defence works for New Ross in association with a main drainage scheme for the town.

The study concluded that limited interim relief works carried out in association with the sewerage scheme could bring about a substantial improvement in the standards of flood protection The study recommended the construction of solid and de-mountable flood defence walls, reflux valves to all surface water outfalls, overflows from the storm outfall pipes to an interceptor sewer and provision for the collection and overpumping of surface water from the Quays.

T. J. O’Connor & Associates completed design, tendering and construction management for the full scheme which commenced construction in June 2007, with the certificate of substantial completion issued in March 2009.

Approval for works below the High Water Mark required consents under the Foreshore Act and a Foreshore Licence application for the relevant works was prepared and submitted by T. J. O’Connor & Associates on behalf of Wexford County Council. Part 8 Planning drawings and descriptions were also prepared by T. J. O’Connor & Associates on behalf of New Ross Town Council.
